FAQ

Mi-Ki FAQ'S

 What is a Mi-Ki (dog)?

The Mi-Ki is a rare distinct breed, DNA profiled, purebred, companion dog. Mi-Kis are known for their loving nature, good health, engaging personalities and capacity for various home situations . Mi-Kis are good candidates for therapy training, show training,  or happy to cuddle with you  in your home. To learn more about Mi-Kis, visit our Mi-Ki Characteristics page and Mi-Ki Heritage page.

What is the cost of a Mi-Ki?

Costs vary according to rarity, extent of health testing,  sex, and demand.  We'd be happy to discuss further the cost of available Mi-Ki puppies.

Are Mi-Kis good with children?

Yes Mi-Kis are very loving, social and are great with children as well as other animals.  As with any toy dog, supervision and proper handling/playing methods are required.

Are Mi-Kis hypoallergenic?

Mi-Kis have a coat of hair rather than fur, making them a low dander dog.  There are two kinds of  Mi-Kis- long coat and smooth face. The smooth face carries a shedding gene with 4 levels of intensity. Long coats, rarely, but can have, 1 gene copy out of 4 of the shedding gene. Some long coat lines potentially can shed minimally. In our experience it would be the equivalent of a human losing hair while brushing.

May I come & visit Rare Gem Mi-Kis?

Yes. We welcome and encourage , by appointment , visit here at the Heart & Soul Homestead.  We offer this for families interested in adopting one of our puppies.

What is ”Holistic”?

Holistic animal care is derived from the concept “wholism” which is the traditional form of health care that encompasses the whole body as the total environment.

In “wholism”, the sum of the body is more than the sum of its parts. In other words, in a holistic approach, it would be incomplete to address only one part of an animal’s body. Every part and system is interconnected.

Wholesome nutrition is the foundation for holistic health care. Proper nutrients provide the fuel to keep the body functioning at peak performance.Environment plays an important role. A good 8 hours of natural sunlight is another important holistic component for healthy pets as well as proper rest and hydration.

What is RGM’s Commitment to Holistic Canine Care?

At RGM we keep detailed information on medical, dietary and environmental history. Daily routines are documented as are special trips away from home. This ensures the ability to track trends and detect anything out of the ordinary.

What is RGM's view on Dog Parks?

Although our dogs play in the park, we don’t advocate “dog parks” or “dog beaches”. There is always a question whether other dogs have had required vaccinations or if they have communicable diseases. We do advocate socialization though mindful and “choiceful” socialization with dogs of known care.

Where can we learn about chemical toxins?

With our commitment to a holistic approach we do not use chemical toxins at the Heart and Soul Homestead. Plants and grasses in and around the Homestead are non-toxic.

To help protect your dog from toxins and poisonous plants it is important to familiarize yourself with the ASPCA lists “A Poison Safe Home“http://www.aspca.org/Pet-care/poison-control/a-poison-safe-home and “Toxic and Non-Toxic Plants” http://aspca.org/toxic . This information is invaluable regardless of your household, where you live or where you take your dog(s). For example, all forms of chocolate are poisonous to dogs; there is a yard/landscaping product, cocoa bean mulch, that can cause serious illness including vomiting, diarrhea, muscle tremors and other neurological symptoms .

What is RGM’s Approach to a Holistic Diet for your Mi-Ki?

The digestive system of dogs in the wild was designed to handle a variety of foods found in the wild (including flesh, internal organs and contents of their prey). This combination provided a diet rich in high quality protein, enzymes, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. While we have domesticated our animals, their digestive tract has remained the same. Eating a varied raw diet is very natural for them and beneficial to their health.

What is RGM’s Approach to a Raw Diet for your Mi-Ki?

Comparatively, a natural raw diet versus commercially prepared dog food consisting of additives, grains, and various preservatives, has consistently shown to improve overall health, including physiological and psychological health, Veterinary expenses are consequently reduced. We advocate developing a base knowledge of various options for feeding your pet a raw diet before a transition.

What are RGM’s Food Safety Tips For You and Your Dog?

Always wash separately any items in the eating area (food bowls, water bowls). Did you know that food safety for dogs is just like food safety for people? Wash hands, bowls, countertops etc. after each meal, to prevent contamination. Just like for us!

If you have multiple dogs in your home, we don't advise free feeding but rather meal times. We suggest removal of the food after their meal is finished for adult dogs. Puppies are different. We free feed over night and if puppy's are safely unattended for a few hours, in addition to 3-4 meals daily. Small meals. Fresh water is always a must day and night.

We advocate signing up for dog food safety notices. It is common that certain dog foods are recalled for various reasons.
