The Mi-Ki was developed in the United States and gained popularity during the 1980's. They have been bred Mi-Ki to Mi-Ki since the late 1980's. They are recognized as a distinct DNA profiled breed since 1992.  Stud books reflect up to 15 generations of Mi-Ki breeding. 


The most widely accepted theory of its origination is a complex mix of various toy breeds including the Shih Tzu, Maltese, Pekeginese, Pomeranian and traces of  Papillion.

Mi-Ki’s are an exceptional breed with excellent health, temperament, longevity, and are the ultimate companion dog.

The long coat Mi-Ki was officially recognized by the United Kennel Club as of January 2016.  The smooth coat Mi-Ki was recognized and added to the UKC standard as of January 2024.

The Mi-Ki has a distinct breed  signature through Wisdom Panel & most recently of May 2022 with Embark Veterinary Inc. due to the efforts of the International 
Mi-Ki Registry.

The Mi-Ki is officially registered as a recognized breed with the the United Kennel Club, the largest all-breed performance-dog registry in the world, registering dogs from all 50 states and 25 foreign countries.
